Behind the Lens: A Bold Bridal Editorial for Rock and Roll Bride

I want to share the wonderful and creative full story of my experience behind Deserted, a bridal fashion editorial later published in Rock and Roll Bride Magazine. My role on this shoot was behind the lens documentation, capturing the process, the crew, and the energy of the day from getting ready through the final frame, alongside the final published images shot by Samantha Jacob Photography. My behind the lens work ran as its own dedicated spread in the issue, titled Behind The Lens and this was truly an honor.

The Concept

Deserted reimagined the bride as, in Rock and Roll Bride’s words, “a force of nature: wild, untamed, unapologetic.” The editorial was built around Cactus Joe’s Blue Diamond Nursery in Las Vegas, stripping away traditional bridal cues, ivory chapels, delicate petals, in favor of windswept hair, raw desert light, and a setting that gave the whole day a striking, slightly surreal backdrop unlike a typical bridal shoot location. 

Getting Ready

The day started well before anyone reached the desert. In That Chapel Downtown, hair and makeup came together under a ring light while the wardrobe was steamed and hung on garment racks, lace and embellished pieces waiting their turn. A makeup kit spread open on a counter, brushes and products laid out with the kind of order that only comes from doing this every week. It’s a quiet, focused part of the day that rarely makes it into a final gallery, but it’s where the entire shoot actually begins.

Arriving at Cactus Joe’s

We pulled up to Cactus Joe’s Blue Diamond Nursery under a “Desert Love” sign bolted to a weathered building, the crew unloading gear straight off the truck, camera cases and reflectors in tow. The nursery itself was its own character in the shoot: greenhouses lined with rows of cacti and succulents, folk art bolted to the walls, and a wagon loaded with fresh flowers, ranunculus and sweet peas in a plastic crate, being pulled between setups. It’s the kind of location that gives a shoot texture before a single frame is composed.

The Styling Details

Between setups, the styling team laid out the pieces that would carry the story: a table scattered with jewelry and a run of metallic gold and silver shoes, catching the desert light. Elsewhere, a rack of pale, ethereal gowns hung against the open sky, backlit until the fabric practically glowed. These are the shots that show a brand or publication how considered the styling really was, down to the last detail.

The Movement

One of the boldest parts of the day departed from traditional bridal white entirely: the model in a flowing coral dress, moving through a spiral labyrinth built from desert stones. She spun and walked the path while the fabric caught the wind, sunlight flaring straight into the lens. It’s a sequence built entirely around motion, and capturing it meant staying loose and reactive, following the fabric and the light rather than waiting for a single static pose.

My Role: Documenting the Day

While Samantha Jacob focused on the final editorial images, my job was to move around the set capturing everything else, from the quiet studio prep in the morning to the crew hauling gear past the Desert Love sign, from the styling flat lays to the movement sequence in the rock spiral, and quiet detail shots like the shoes resting on tulle after a look change. These are the moments that never make it into a polished final gallery but tell the real story of how the shoot came together. The day itself went smoothly, which gave me the room to focus purely on observation rather than problem solving, following the energy on set rather than directing it.

This kind of behind the lens documentation is its own skill, distinct from shooting the final images. It requires staying alert to a different set of moments across a full production day: a stylist adjusting a hem seconds before a shot, a model catching her breath between takes in the desert heat, the overall rhythm of a shoot from studio to location and back. Rock and Roll Bride ran a selection of these images as their own dedicated Behind The Lens spread alongside the main editorial, which is a strong signal of how much editors value this kind of documentation. It’s the same instinct I bring to any shoot where the goal is capturing process and atmosphere, not just the polished result.
